The Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA), in partnership with local roof truss fabricator, Coastal Trusses (Pty) Ltd, will be hosting a CPD-accredited workshop on Building Regulations and Standards of Timber Roof Trusses at Lomond Wine Estate near Gansbaai in Overstrand on 7 November 2019.

Architectural trends, increasing emphasis on energy efficiency and the continual development of new building materials all result in residential roof structures becoming increasingly complex. The workshop will contribute to creating greater clarity and understanding of building regulations as they apply to timber roof trusses.

While timber remains the most environmentally friendly and affordable roof construction material available today, as part of a highly engineered system, it is critical that it is correctly and properly regulated, treated, applied and inspected. Similarly, metal roof coverings have vastly improved over the years with intelligent coating technology and corrosion resistance, but key to a long-term successful covering – even in harsh coastal regions – is correct installation practice.

More than this, growing concern for energy efficiency and thermal comfort has necessitated the integration of thermal insulation design and roof design from the onset. Modern roof designs are often complex and frequently make insulation a more challenging task, calling for more complex insulating materials.

“The role of regulatory standards should not be underestimated in ensuring end product quality and rather than having them feared or avoided, we want to help building contractors and professional practitioners to truly grasp these regulations and embrace them as the useful tools that they are in their day-to-day practice,” says Amanda Obbes, ITC-SA general manager. “This is why we have partnered with Coastal Trusses, who initiated this workshop to equip architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, building control officials and contractors with knowledge of the basic principles, sound practices and minimum standards which need to be applied when timber roof structures are erected, insulated and covered with metal sheeting,” she says.

Who should attend?

The workshop, Building Regulations & Standards of Timber Roof Trusses, will cover certification, grading and preservation of structural timber as well as metal roof coverings and roof insulation, and is geared to engineers, architects, architectural technologists, quantity surveyors, project managers, building contractors and building control officials.
