At the recent annual general meeting of Sawmilling South Africa, chairman, Duncan Mackay, presented his report.

He noted that the industry had been relatively stable over the last year, which in turn had a positive impact on employment, enhanced growth and stimulated economic activity.

He noted that below average returns for the last five years had seen sawmillers investing in their own operations and seeking greater efficiencies.

Members continue to be innovative and resilient against conditions that have been exceptional i.e., floods and extensive damage to properties, the July insurrections and Eskom’s ongoing inability to manage electricity output. Production costs are increasing and the potential for interest rates increasing is highlighting the need to be even more innovative and clever in business.

The relationships with kindred bodies and government continue to strengthen.

Highlights

Skills and Technical Development through FP&M Seta. Much work needs to be done on the learnerships and apprenticeship side. Unnecessary delays and incompetence of government in progressing these is frustrating, especially due to the shortage of technical skills.

New Plantings

Clearly new plantings require increased activity and the revival of old areas needs attention. This must happen sooner rather than later and hopefully the PPGI Forum can facilitate this.

Marketing initiatives

New and fresh branding is complete and will contribute to potential export opportunities, particularly to Australia.

The new WOODAPP will launch later this year which will contribute to increasing the knowledge base of architects/engineers/designers.

The Chairman thanked his Executive for their continued support and involvement enabling the Association to continue its work. He reminded all that Covid is still with us and urged members to maintain protocols to keep all safe and healthy.
